OKLAHOMA CITY – In conjunction with the 2019 NCCAA Central Region Championship being hosted by Mid-America Christian University, the Central Region All-Region teams were announced for women’s basketball on Wednesday afternoon. The teams and honorable mentions featured 18 players from six region schools, four of whom are participating at the NCCAA regional.
Alexis Shannon of MACU and Kelsie Cleeton of College of the Ozarks were named co-Players of the Year, and C of O’s Becky (Vest) Mullis shared region Coach of the Yearhonors with Tiffany Phillips of Southwestern Assemblies of God University.
Shannon, a 5-11 junior from Noblesville, Indiana, averaged 17.7 points per game for the Evangels, and she scored her 1,000th career point in early February. She also became MACU’s NAIA-era leading scorer, and she is already eighth on MACU’s career scoring list. She also posted nine double-doubles in the regular season to lead the Evangels.
Cleeton, a 5-7 senior from Springfield, Missouri, averaged a double-double for the Bobcats this season. She scored 13.7 points per game, and she snared an average of 11.7 rebounds per contest. She also averaged nearly six assists and three steals per game.
Mullis led the Bobcats to a 29-3 regular season record, and a berth in the NAIA Division II National Championship as a No. 2 seed. The Bobcats easily won the Association of Independent Institutions postseason tournament to take the top automatic berth from the AII to the NAIA tournament.
Phillips led SAGU to a fourth place finish in the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season standings and a finish in the semifinal round of the SAC tournament. She and the Lady Lions have a 21-11 record entering the regional championship.
Shannon and Cleeton were each joined by teammates on the All-Region first team. MACU’s Shaylan Coleman and C of O’s Cass Johnson were also First Team All-Region performers, and Lexi Rich of SAGU rounded out the All-Region first team.
SAGU’s Jenna Price and Sydney Meador earned Second Team All-Region honors, as did Abby Oliver of C of O. The trio was joined by Kayla Bloodworth of Nebraska Christian College, and a pair of Southwestern Christian University Eagles – Andi McGill and Carley Frymire.
The Third Team consisted of Amy Tully (SCU), Jennah Coffman (MACU), Kiara Glenn (SAGU), Nevada Denton (MACU), and Jazmyn Santiel (NCC). Central Christian College’s Piper Kelthoff and Tania Lowe were named All-Region Honorable Mention.
