Lady Cats Sweep Opening Classic
Point Lookout, MO - In busy, yet solid, opening to their season, the College of the Ozarks Lady Cat volleyball team secured a series of victories at the Lady Cat Fall Classic on August 29-30 at Keeter Gymnasium. Facing teams including Mission University, University of Saint Mary, Williams Baptist University, and Avila University, the Lady Cats had a dominant weekend on the court and finished with a clean 4-0 sweep.
The tournament kicked off with the Lady Cats overwhelming Williams Baptist University with set scores of 25-11, 25-8, and 25-6, setting the tone for the weekend classic. Their momentum continued against the University of Saint Mary, although the match stretched to four sets with scores of 26-24, 25-22, 18-25, and 25-13, indicating a tougher competition but a solid finish by the Lady Cats. Against Avila University, the Lady Cats stumbled slightly in the second set with a 19-25 loss but recovered to win the next two sets 25-14 and 25-14. The final match against Mission University saw the Lady Cats in control, concluding with set victories of 25-15, 25-12, and 25-12.
Top players Cora Roweton, Bri Linehan, and Anna Brunner made significant contributions throughout the series, with Roweton notably achieving 15 kills against Avila University. Defensively, Anna Brunner led with 8 blocks over the tournament, while Kalli Noell contributed 7 overall. The defensive efforts were complemented by outstanding backcourt play, with Emma Godwin and Gabby Bozzay playing key roles as liberos, and Anna Howe supporting well with key digs througout the weekend.
The Lady Cats are scheduled to meet the Valor of Evangel University this Wednesday, at Keeter Gym hoping to build on their early undefeated streak. Coach Muckenthaler praised the team's effort at the Classic, highlighting the integration of six freshmen into the squad and commending the team's composure and cooperative play across what proved to be a successful tournament start.
