College of the Ozarks men’s and women’s basketball travelled to St. Thomas to play the University of the Virgin Islands. On Tuesday, the Lady Bobcats defeated the Lady Buccaneers, 74-33.
In the first quarter, the Lady Cats quickly pounced to a 19-10 lead. C of O followed that effort with a 17-4 second quarter. Although C of O didn’t score at their typical rate in the first half, they built their lead with stingy defense, holding UVI to just 5 for 31 (16.1%) from the field.
After the break, the Lady Bobcats blew the game wide open by shooting the ball much better. Senior Ashley Forrest nailed 5 of 9 from downtown to lead the way with 15 points. Freshman Harper Little matched the game-high 15 points, by driving and slashing to the paint. By the end of the third quarter, C of O was is dominant position, 57-22.
The fourth quarter was more of the same, as C of O outscored UVI 17-11 for the 74-33 win.
As a team in the second half, the Lady Bobcats shot 15 for 32 (46.9%) from the field including 7 for 15 (46.7%) from distance. Defensively, C of O remained stifling as UVI managed only 6 for 38 (15.8%) for the second half. For the game, the Lady Buccaneers shot just 11 for 69 (15.9%).
Other notable stat leaders include Annie Noah, who led all rebounders with 11 and added six points. Aleksei Smith grabbed seven boards, scored six points, and dished out a game-high four assists. Abby Oliver chipped in 13 points on 5 of 10 shooting.
C of O will return to action tomorrow (Wednesday) for a rematch with UVI.
