#3 -- Abby Oliver

College of the Ozarks women’s basketball went on the road to Siloam Springs, Arkansas to take on the Golden Eagles of John Brown University on Saturday.  The Lady Bobcats came away with a dominant victory, 86-65.

The scoring started quickly for both teams, as they traded three-point buckets on the first few possessions.  John Brown used a mid-quarter run to take a six-point lead, 12-6.   Lady Bobcat Annie Noah sparked a rally by scoring on a turnaround jumper and on the next possession kicking out for an Abby Oliver three-point make.  Oliver wasn’t done, tying the game at 16 on a three-pointer in transition.  Oliver finished the game with a game high 24 points on 10 for 20 shooting.

College of the Ozarks would take the lead at the end of the quarter after a block by Harper Little and subsequent three-pointer.  At the end of the quarter, C of O led 21-16.

To start the second quarter, C of O went on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 13 points.  John Brown fought back to cut the Lady Bobcat lead to six going into the break, 46-40.  For the half, C of O shot a solid 16 for 32 from the field (50%) and 10 for 21 from distance (47.6%).  The Golden Eagles countered shooting 14 for 34 (41.2%) from the field and 6 for 14 (42.9%) from three-point land.

In the second half, it was clear the Lady Bobcats added extra focus on the defensive end.

Head Coach Becky Mullis commented, “I am pleased with our performance today, particularly in the second half as we tightened up defensively.  (In the second half) our communication, rebounding, and transition defense improved.”

Those adjustments resulted in JBU shooting a paltry 7 for 27 from the field (25.9%).  The Lady Bobcats did a great job challenging three-pointers as well, as JBU shot just 2 for 13 from distance (15.4%).  As a result, C of O extended their lead in the third quarter to 16 points.

For the final quarter, the Lady Bobcats continued to score efficiently and from multiple sources.

“We had a very balanced scoring attack with four people in double figures and every player scored.  I am also proud of our free throw shooting and only turning the ball over six times.  Those are areas we have focused on in practice the past few weeks.  Overall, it was a great team victory,” Coach Mullis concluded.

For the game the Lady Bobcats forced 13 turnovers.  In addition to Oliver, Michelle Gabani scored in double figures with 12 and Aleksei Smith added 10.  Harper Little scored 13 points and defensively led with 3 blocks.
