The Lady Bobcats defeated Bellevue University (Neb.), 69-60, in Day One of the Lady Bobcats Coke Classic in Point Lookout, Mo to extend their winning streak to five games.
The first quarter found the teams battling back and forth, with an unusual seven Lady Cats turnovers compared to four by the Bruins. Aleksei Smith and Kyra Hardesty opened the scoring for C of O with a basket and a 3-pointer, respectively, to take a 5-1 lead. The Lady Cats finished the quarter on top, 12-9.
As the game progressed, the Lady Cats extended their lead to as many as 16 points with two minutes remaining in the second quarter. The Bruins, however, took advantage of a couple C of O turnovers and posted a 9-2 run to close out the second quarter, trailing 33-24.
Following the break, the two teams exchanged baskets for a time before the Lady Cats took a 13-point lead at the 3:11 mark. Again, the two teams fought for control, with the Bruins rallying to score eight unanswered points to close the third quarter, down 55-50.
In the fourth period, Bellevue pulled to within four points with just over five minutes to play, but the Lady Cats pushed ahead to collect a 69-60 victory.
The Lady Cats shot an impressive 46.9% from the field on the night, hitting 23 of 49 shots and draining 8-20 from beyond the arc. The Bruins shot 38% but were able to sink only 3 of their 15 three-pointers. The Lady Cats collected 36 rebounds; Bellevue grabbed 34. Turnovers were also high, with CofO giving up the ball 20 times against 15 by the Bruins.
Leading the stat charts for the Lady Cats were Abby Oliver with 23 points, Annie Noah with 8 rebounds, Smith and Hardesty with 3 assists, and Ashley Forrest with 2 steals. Also scoring in double figures on the night were Smith (13) and Noah (12).
The Lady Bobcats return to their home court tomorrow for Day 2 of the Lady Bobcat Coke Classic. They will face Lyon College at 4:00 p.m.
