In their first match of Day 2 in the Chick-fil-A Classic, the Lady Bobcats jumped out quickly to a two-set advantage over Hannibal-LaGrange, 25-15 and 25-11. While the Trojans were able to tussle away set three, 28-26, C of O finished the job convincingly by a score of 26-10 in the fourth frame.
Lady Cat Ryley Thixton was dominant throughout the match, combining 23 kills with 13 digs and 4 blocks. Maggie Plake tallied a season-high seven blocks, while Kaylan Smith added 12 kills, 5 digs, and 4 blocks. Senior Rielly Wallace recorded a season-high 51 assists, adding 12 digs, 6 kills and 4 blocks. Defensively, Izzy Gibbany and Haley Stallings led the way with 32 and 20 digs respectively.
The final game of the day pitted two undefeated teams—William Woods University and C of O. The Lady Cats opened up with a 25-22 victory in set one, highlighted by four kills and two blocks by Kaylan Smith. Set two saw the Owls come back swinging, as they downed 14 kills compared to seven by the Lady Cats, tying the match at one with a 25-15 victory. In the third set, the Lady Cats and Owls battled back and forth, tying the score on seven occasions. The Owls took an 18-22 lead, and the Bobcats pulled within two points on three occasions, but C of O was unable to snag the lead and WWU took the set by a 25-22 score. The Lady Cats refused to throw in the towel and fought their way back from an 8-12 deficit to tie the score at 12. They then proceeded to exchange the lead until the two teams were once again knotted up, this time at 22 apiece. A kill, followed quickly by an ace, from Wallace put C of O up 24-2, and an attacking error by William Woods gave the Lady Cats a 25-22 victory to send the match into a deciding fifth set. With the score tied at 2-2 in the fifth set, the Lady Cats went on an 8-3 run to take a 10-5 lead. The Owls pulled within two points at 11-9, but a 4-1 C of O run closed out the match for a 15-10 win.
Stat leaders for the Lady Cats in the final match featured Ryley Thixton (13 kills), Rielly Wallace (33 assists, 3 aces), Izzy Gibbany (26 digs, 3 aces), and Maggie Plake (6 blocks).
The Lady Cats improve their record on the season to 8-6 and will head to Cottey College for a match on Tuesday evening.
