The College of the Ozarks volleyball team lost to a hot Bellevue Bruins team on Thursday evening at home. The Bruins, who entered the season ranked #22 in the NAIA Coaches Poll, extended their winning streak to five games, defeating the Lady Cats in four sets.
Bellevue set the tone early with a balanced attack. The Bruins won the first set 16-25, with all six starters recording a kill. The barrage continued in the second set as the Bruins downed the Cats, 15-25.
Fortunately, in a set that featured six lead changes and another half-dozen ties, the third frame finally broke the Bobcats’ way, following a prolonged rally with a kill by Rielly Wallace. A flurry of kills from Abi Menzies and Maggie Plake secured the set win, 25-20.
Despite pouncing to a 5-0 lead in the fourth set, the Bobcats’ momentum was stifled, as the Bruins went on a twelve-point streak of their own off of a bevy of Lady Cat attack errors. C of O hung tough to trim the lead to just two points late in the set, but the Bruins prevailed, taking the final frame, 20-25.
Lady Cat stat leaders featured Abi Menzies tallying nine kills, Rielly Wallace dishing 24 assists and adding eight kills, Izzy Gibbany snagging nine digs and acing two serves, and Ryley Thixton and Maggie Plake recording six blocks apiece.
With the win, the Lady Cats fall to 3-4 while the Bruins improve to 10-2. The Lady Cats return to action at the Evangel Tournament with a match on Friday, September 6th, at 4:30 PM and two matches on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
