Lady Cats Split in Day One of Labor Day Classic

The Lady Bobcat Volleyball team traveled to Bellevue, Nebraska on Friday to compete in Labor Day Classic.  The Lady Bobcats dropped their opening match against College of St. Mary, 2-3, but rebounded in their second match to capture a five-set victory over Peru State.


The Lady Bobcats were able to grind out to a two-set lead against College of St. Mary (Neb.), 26-24 and 25-22.  The match continued to be a back-and-forth battle with St. Mary’s narrowly taking the next set, 25-21, and following up with an 25-18 win in the fourth.  In the fifth and final set, St. Mary’s jumped out to a 7-2 lead and never looked back, winning the set 15-9, to take the match. 


Lady Cat stat leaders for the match featured:  Ryley Thixton – 14 kills, 20 digs; Abi Menzies – 15 kills, 3 solo blocks; Rielly Wallace – 41 assists; Delanie Gaston - 2 service aces; along with Haley Stallings and Izzy Gibbany – 12 digs apiece.


In the second match of the day, the Lady Cats found themselves in another down-to-the-wire match against a scrappy Peru State team.  Despite opening the match with a decisive first set of 25-17, C of O found themselves in a dog fight the next three sets, 21-25, 25-21, and 25-27.  Fortunately, Kaylee Larimer caught fire in the deciding set with three late kills to help the Lady Cats pull away 15-9 and take the match. 


Highlighting the stat chart for the Lady Cats were:  Ryley Thixton – 24 kills, 13 digs; Abi Menzies – 15 kills; Izzy Gibbany – 20 digs, 10 assists; Rielly Wallace – 46 assists; Kaylan Smith - 5 blocks; Shay Latture – 13 digs; and Haley Stallings – 2 aces, 10 digs.


The Lady Bobcats continue action in the Labor Day Classic on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. against Montana Tech and at 3:00 p.m. against Morningside (Iowa), who is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll.
