College of the Ozarks men’s and women’s basketball hosted Evangel University for the RibCrib Highway 65 Showdown on Tuesday.
The Lady Bobcats opened the evening with hot shooting from the outside, connecting on 4 of 9 three-point attempts in the first quarter to take control of the game, 16-9. However, the Lady Bobcats went ice cold in the second quarter shooting just 4 of 17 from the field and 2 of 7 from downtown. Fortunately, the Lady Crusaders were shooting bricks themselves, missing all six of their three-point attempts for quarter and finishing just 3 of 16 from the field in the second frame. At the break, the Lady Bobcats led 26-18.
To start the second half, C of O set the tone on defense, forcing five turnovers in the third quarter alone, including a five-second count they promptly turned into an and-one by Grace Steiger. Near the end of the quarter, Abby Oliver used a quick crossover to drive and finish with her left, pushing the lead to 12. Evangel’s Brianna Vogts and Alexis Roach found a groove late in the third to trim the C of O lead back to eight.
In the fourth quarter, Evangel attacked the glass to trim the lead to as little as one point. However, senior Lady Bobcat Ashley Forrest went to work, draining a deep three-pointer, followed by a poke-away-steal that led to a triple from Harper Little. Freshman Kayley Frank used a pocket-pass to lead Aleksei Smith right to the hoop with just under a minute to essentially seal the win, 60-56.
Abby Oliver led the team in scoring with 12 points. Ashley Forrest scored 11 and grabbed seven rebounds. Kyra Hardesty chipped in 10 points. Sophomore Annie Noah scored six points and had a game-high 10 boards.
