College of the Ozarks men’s and women’s cross country teams competed Saturday in Fayetteville, Arkansas, at the Chile Pepper Festival.
This was the 30th Anniversary of the Chile Pepper Festival, featuring 49 men’s and 51 women’s collegiate teams in addition to 100-plus high school teams running in separate races. The race day was rain-free, but the University of Arkansas’ off-road course, where the run was held, was quite soggy from previous weather conditions.
The collegiate races of 5K for the women and 8K for the men included powerhouse teams such as Arkansas, Dallas Baptist, Iowa Central, North Texas, and Wichita State to name a few.
The Bobcats placed 42nd of 49 teams, posting a team time of 2:23:42 in the men’s 8K run. Freshman Garrett Pierce once again led the way for the Bobcats, completing the race in 27:35.4, seven seconds faster than his first collegiate 8K run last week. Surprisingly, despite the soggy conditions, many of the men set their best times of the season--from several seconds to just under a minute. Sam Baumer was not far behind Pierce, recording a 202nd place finish in 27:38.8. Shane York (29:07.0-308th), David Byrd (29:33.0-327th), Wesley Moore (29:47.8-342nd), Sam Scaggs (29:54.6-350th), Mason Apperson (31:03.7-386th), and Mucyo Bangerezako (33.39.1-424th) rounded out the Bobcat runners. Full race results for the collegiate men can be found here.
College of the Ozarks women’s team placed 41st of 51 teams with a team time of 1:45:36 in the 5K race. Lady Bobcat Bethany Edgar was the top runner for CofO, finishing in 195th place with a time of 20:15.5. Last week, Edgar posted her personal best by more than a minute with a 20:05.48. Considering the soggy conditions, Edgar’s time in the Chile Pepper gives evidence that she has made great strides since last season. Following Edgar in the top three for the Lady Cats were Adeline Holder (21:03.6 -247th) and Holly Duncan (21:08.9-255th). Bethany Marteney (21:14.7-270th), Alyssa Goth (21:53.5-316th), Naomi Murrell (22:24.4-338th), and Mary Zimmerman (22:29.7-346th) assisted CofO in achieving 41st place in the event. Full race results for the collegiate women can be found here.
Both teams will have a break in the action, with their next race scheduled for the St. Ambrose University Invitational on October 6th in Bettendorf, Iowa.
