College of the Ozarks Lady Bobcats defeated a tough Benedictine College (Kan.) squad on Wednesday evening in four sets, 25-20, 21-25, 25-16, and 28-26.
Benedictine, who plays in the Heart of America Conference, entered the match with a four-game winning streak intact, holding a 12-8 record on the season. The Lady Bobcats also had four consecutive wins to their credit leading into the game with a record of 18-5.
The first set found College of the Ozarks taking a six-point advantage at 9-3 and maintaining it through a good portion of the set, closing with a 25-20 win. Set two saw the two teams in a tight battle, staying within 2-3 points of one another. The Lady Cats pulled to within one point at 20-21, but the Ravens outscored CofO 4-1 to close out the set with a victory. CofO opened set three, trailing 4-6, proceeded to tie the game at 6, and never looked back, taking the set 25-16. The Cats took a 7-3 lead to start set four, but the Ravens fought back and tied the score at 10. Benedictine continued to perform and stretched their lead to four points before the Cats battled back to tie the score at 21. The two teams traded leads until CofO took the final set, 28-26.
Lady Bobcat senior Alex Spears of Perryville, Mo. led the Lady Bobcats with 19 kills on the night, while collecting her 1000thcareer kill. Spears’ accomplishment is a milestone, but is enhanced by having reached her goal midway through her third season. Also leading CofO in the stat charts were junior Rielly Dobbs (Nixa, Mo.) with 55 assists and two aces, Haley Stallings (Fair Grove, Mo.) with 25 digs, and Kaylan Smith (Ozarks, Mo.) with 5 blocks.
Three Lady Bobcats recorded double-doubles on the night--Ryley Thixton (15 kills, 16 digs), Dobbs (55 assists, 13 digs), and Spears (19 kills, 14 digs).
College of the Ozarks drilled 66 kills with 17 errors in 169 attempts to post a .290 hitting percentage for the night, compared to Benedictine at .177.
The Lady Cats will continue their homestand by hosting the A.I.I. Tri-Match this weekend. CofO will play two matches against Haskell University (Kan.) and two matches against Crowley’s Ridge College (Ark.). The event will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Friday with a game between Haskell and Crowley’s Ridge, followed by matches featuring CofO at 5 and 7 p.m. Saturday’s matches will be played at 9 and 11 a.m., with the final match at 1 p.m.
