Lady Cat basketball opened their season on Monday evening against Tabor College (Kan.) and came away with a hard-earned 67-55 win.
The NAIA DII Women’s Basketball Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll ranked the Lady Cats at #6 and the Tabor College Bluejays at #20.
CofO took the lead early in the game, posting a 19-14 first quarter and 17-11 second quarter, to head into half-time with an 11-point advantage over the Bluejays. Upon return to the court in the second half, the Bluejays held their own, topping CofO 18-17 in the 3rd quarter and trailing by only two points in the fourth to close out the game trailing by 12.
The senior trio of Cass Johnson, Kelsie Cleeton, and Madi Brethower proved problematic for the Bluejays. Johnson led all scorers with 21 points. Cleeton picked up where she left off last season by posting a double-double of 16 points and game-leading 17 rebounds, while also dishing 4 assists. Brethower added 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists to complete the senior stats.
Newcomers Michelle Gabani and Annie Noah contributed a total of 5 points, hauled down 9 rebounds, and handed out 5 assists in their debut game.
The Lady Bobcats (1-0) will open up the College’s weekend homecoming festivities with a 7:00 p.m. game on Friday evening against Southwestern College (Kan.) .
