After a convincing 3-1 victory over Crowley’s Ridge College on Friday, the Lady Cat Volleyball team was set to face the host, Lincoln Christian University, and Cottey College in day two of the Lincoln Christian Invitational.
The Lady Cats battled back and forth in the first match against Lincoln Christian, but the carryover of momentum and confidence from Friday helped propel them to the win, 3-0. After a lengthy tug of war in the first set, neither team could step out in front. Just past midway through, the score was knotted up at 16-16. The Lady Bobcats scored the next three points to lead 19-16 off kills by Emily Aldridge, Abi Menzies, and an error for the Red Lions. The Red Lions answered but the Lady Cats took the serve back and maintained their three point edge. With the score at 24-21, Amelia Whatley was set by Emily Aldridge and she slammed home the final point.
Set two was much the same. Back and forth points and the Cats led 9-8. The Lady Cats used a kill by Ryley Thixton and a series of LCU errors to expand their lead to 14-10 before the Red Lions called a time out. The time out didn’t slow the momentum of the Lady Cats and they went on a 6-3 run to get to 20-13. The Red Lions scored a couple of unanswered points, but the Lady Bobcats bounced right back to finish off the set off another Thixton kill, 25-18.
The third set was a duplicate of the previous two. Neither team could get out in front as points were traded to a 12-12 tie. The Lady Cats then took control with a 5-0 run and led 17-12. With their backs to the wall, LCU fought back to a 17-16 score but the lady Bobcats would answer and build the lead back to six of kills by Thixton and Menzies and errors by LCU. A kill by Morgan Austin would seal the set, and match 25-19.
