College of the Ozarks hosted the Lady Bobcat Coke Classic this weekend, featuring John Brown University (Ark.), Lyon College (Ark.), and Bellevue University (Neb.).  The Lady Cats posted a 2-0 record, Lyon and Bellevue went 1-1, and JBU fell 0-2.

After defeating Bellevue 69-60 on Friday evening, the Lady Cats returned to action Saturday afternoon to take on the NAIA Div. I  #20 Scots of Lyon College.

C of O took an 8-4 lead midway through the first quarter before a couple of missed treys and a pair of Lady Cat turnovers allowed the Scots to knot up the game at 8.  The Lady Cats took an 11-10 advantage, and saw it blossom to 14-10, as Abby Oliver drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to close out the period.

The second quarter saw Lady Cat freshman Kayley Frank (Strafford, Mo.) come into the game and score 11 second-quarter points to help C of O take a 34-23 advantage into the locker room at the half.

Although the Lady Cats gave up the ball eight times in the half, the Scots tallied nine turnovers of their own.  C of O shot 39.3% from the field and hauled in 21 boards, while Lyon shot 33.3% with 18 rebounds. Solid free-throw shooting aided the Lady Cats, and the went 10 of 12 from the line, while the Scots were 2 for 7.

The Lady Cats held a 14-point advantage early in the third quarter, but a pair of missed shots by C of O, combined with two treys by the Scots’ Madison Riley bookending a two-point make by Liz Henderson brought Lyon to within six points at 43-37.  The Lady Cats got back on track with another trey by Oliver and closed out the third with an 11-point lead.

Five quick points by Katie Turner to open the fourth quarter found the Scots back in the running, trailing by six once again.  Lady Cat freshman Julie Stone (Thayer, Mo.) stepped up to score five points of her own and took the lead back to 11.  The Scots continued to battle until the 2 ½ minute mark, but one more triple by Oliver dashed their hopes, and the Lady Cats handed the Scots their first loss of the season,  74-62.

The Lady Bobcat stat lines featured Oliver with 21 pts., 4 reb., and 2 steals,  shooting .500 from the floor (7-14 FG, 5-10 3pt).  Kayley Frank added 14 points of her own (4-8 FG, 1-2 3pt., 5-6 FT). Annie Noah and Grace Steiger collected 5 rebounds apiece, while Michelle Gabani and Kyra Hardesty each dished 3 assists.  The Lady Cats shot 51.7% in the second half to improve to 45.6% for the game.

C of O’s record now stands at 6-1 on the early season.  The Lady Cats will head to Columbia. Mo. on Monday to take on the Division I Cougars, whose record currently stands at 3-0.  Game time will be 6:00 p.m.
