College of the Ozarks Bobcat baseball split a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon with the Culver-Stockton College (CSC) Wildcats. CSC took the win in game one, 8-4, and the Bobcats picked up the game two victory, 4-3.
In game one, CSC jumped out to a 6-0 lead, after scoring one run in the fist and five in the second, before the Bobcats stepped to the plate in the bottom of the second inning. Following two quick fly balls to the outfield, Bobcat Kolton Giefer doubled to right, Bryce Burtless hit an RBI single to left-center, and Kyle Giefer drilled a two-run homerun over the right field fence to pull the Cats within three runs. The Wildcats tallied one run in the fourth and another in the fifth to take an 8-3 lead. The Bobcats scraped together one more run in the bottom of the fifth, but they were unable to push any additional runs across the plate. Collan Thrasher (3-4) suffered the loss for the Bobcats, giving up seven earned runs on 12 hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Leading the Cats at the plate were Max Pulley (2-4, 1R, SB), Bryce Burtless (1-3, 1R, 1RBI), Kyle Giefer (1-3, 1R, 2RBI, homerun), and Kolton Giefer (1-3, 1R, double).
Game two was a much closer affair. The Wildcats scored one run in the first and another in the third to take a 2-0 lead. It looked as if the Bobcats were going to make a move in the bottom of the fourth, as they loaded the bases with two outs. It wasn’t to be, though, as a ground ball by Burtless closed out the inning. In the bottom of the sixth, however, Kolton Giefer was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a Ryan Daggs double to deep left. A strikeout by Lincoln Rasmussen and an RBI ground out by Burtless were followed by a Dawson Nimmo single up the middle to score Daggs and tie the game at 2. The Wildcats were not to be deterred, as they returned n the top of the seventh to collect a run on a hit by pitch, ground out, and a double by Brian Wolford to take a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, freshman Brent Shinkle opened up the inning with a double to deep center. Max Pulley reached on a walk, and Kyle Abrahamson advanced the runners with a bunt. The Wildcats gave senior Jay Kaufman an intentional walk to load the bases. Freshman Kolton Giefer (Kickapoo HS, Springfield, Mo.) stepped to the plate and proceeded to drive in the tying and winning runs with a single to centerfield. Giefer’s brother, Kyle, captured the complete-game win to bring his season record to 3-2 on the season. He allowed three earned runs on five hits, three walks, and six strikeouts. Leading the Cats at the plate in game two were Nimmo (3-3, 1RBI), Daggs (3-3, 1R, double), B Shinkle (2-3, 1R, double), and Ko. Giefer (1-2, 1R, 2RBI, 1BB, 1HP, game-winning hit).
The split brings the Bobcats’ record to 10-13 on the season. The two teams will return to Coach Bob Smith Field-College of the Ozarks on Friday to play another doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
