College of the Ozarks Volleyball lost a pair of matches on the final day of the GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic hosted by Bellevue University. The Lady Cats, who went 1-1 in Friday’s matches, faced some very stiff competition Saturday. facing Montana Tech and Morningside College (Iowa).
The Lady Cats were first opposed by the Montana Tech Diggers, who entered the day as one of the hottest teams in the tournament with a record of 9-2. The Diggers wasted no time winning the first set in convincing fashion, 14-25. The Lady Cats struck back with a hard fought 25-21 second set win, but the third set would narrowly go the Diggers’ way, 22-25. In the fourth and final set, Montana Tech finished on a seven-point run to close out the match, 17-25. Hitting errors plagued the Lady Cats, as they posted a .091 hitting percentage.
Lady Cat stat leaders featured: Ryley Thixton – 14 kills, 21 digs; Izzy Gibbany – 23 digs; Reilly Wallace – 28 assists, 10 digs, and Maggie Plake – 3 blocks.
Despite dropping their first match earlier in the day, the Morningside Lady Mustangs entered the match on a tear with a record of 6-1 and knocking on the door of the NAIA Top 25. The C of O Lady Cats never found their footing on the attack, converting just 25 kills in the match and losing in straight sets, 16-25, 16-25, and 15-25.
The Lady Cats were led by: Abi Menzies – 9 kills, Haley Stallings – 16 digs, and Reilly Wallace – 21 assists.
C of O returns to action at home on Monday, September 2, and will look to return to their winning ways as they take on Stephens College at 5:00 PM.
