The  Lady Bobcats faced-off with the #3 seed Hastings Lady Broncos (Neb.) on Friday evening in the Second Round of the NAIA Division II National Championship tournament and came away witha commanding 86-55 victory.  The Lady Bobcats had defeated Hastings earlier in the year, but Hastings played that game without their star point guard Shandra Farmer.

The first quarter began in back-and-forth fashion with Farmer and Lady Cat Kelsie Cleeton trading intermittent buckets.  Unlike the previous game, C of O struggled from the field including 2 for 10 from behind-the-arc.  Two late defensive stops, including a swift rotation by Cassidy Johnson on a defensive fast break, which caused a traveling violation, helped the Lady Cats finish the quarter leading 20-13.

Midway through the second quarter Sophomore Abby Oliver found her groove knocking down a nifty step-back jumper for two, shortly followed by a made basket from three-point land.  Late in the first half, a Kelsie Cleeton steal and three-pointer extended the C of O lead to 38-19.

C of O finished the half holding Lady Bronco Shandra Farmer to just five points.  The Lady Cats caused 10 Lady Bronco turnovers and went into the break leading 42-25.  Abby Oliver finished the first half with 10 points.  Kelsie Cleeton scored 16 first-half points and added seven rebounds.

Any Lady Bronco hopes of getting back into the game were quickly extinguished by Cassidy Johnson’s third quarter eruption.  Johnson scored 13 of her 22 points in the third frame alone on 5-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-5 from downtown.  C of O as a team shot 9-of-16 from the field for the quarter and pushed their lead to 65 - 39.

Clicking on all cylinders, C of O capitalized on five offensive boards in the fourth for 14 second-chance points to finish off the win, 86-55.

For the game, the Lady Bobcats held the Lady Broncos to just 19-of-59 shooting (32%) and forced 15 turnovers.  C of O’s strategy to disrupt point guard Shandra Farmer worked, as the guard finished with just 14 points, two assists, and a pair of turnovers.  Her Bobcat counterpart, Kelsie Cleeton, finished with a double-double, including 22 points and 12 rebounds.  Fellow Senior Madisen Brethower also recorded a double-double, adding 11 points and 12 boards.  Cassidy Johnson’s 17 second-half points gave her 22 for the game.  Abby Oliver netted 19 points to round out the Lady Bobcats in double figures.

With the win, the Lady Bobcats advance to the Quarterfinals to face #1 seed Northwestern (Iowa) on Saturday, March 9th at 8:00 P.M.

Best wishes to our Lady Cats for another great game on Saturday night!

Watch the Games LIVE via Video Stream

Because these are national championships, there is a fee associated with viewing the games.  The live stream link is:

      A few (hopefully helpful) instructions:

  • Plan ahead and purchase your pass before game time, as it will take a few minutes to set up your account.
  • The link should take you directly to “live events”
  • Click on the date at the top left and select the date of the game you wish to watch
  • Then, to the right you will see a box titled “All Sports” - select the sport (women’s basketball or men’s basketball), and a list of all the games on that date for that sport will pop up
  • Find the game you want to watch and click on the TV screen/box to the right of the game
  • A message will pop up to have you set up an account – just follow the instructions
  • Once your account is set up, it will give you options for purchasing a streaming pass.  You can select one game only $9.95 or the entire tournament $34.95.  If you purchase a tournament pass, remember it is good only for one sport – so, if you want to watch the men’s game and the women’s game, you will need to purchase two separate game or tournament passes (but you will use the same login account for both).
  • Each time you go to watch a game, you will log in with your email address and the password you set up initially – then you just select your game and you should be all set to go.
  • Remember, sometimes the schedule falls behind, so you may get a message that the game is not on yet. Games may start late, but they will not start earlier that published times.
  • Also, if you should have trouble getting the stream, try opening it differently (for example, if you typically use Internet Explorer, try using Google Chrome).  Stretch Internet also has a support team.  If I recall correctly, there is a spot when you open the game that gives you some instructions and help.
