The Lady Bobcats hosted the Cottey College Comets on Wednesday evening and came away with a big 90-46 victory.
The Lady Cats and Comets traded baskets to open the game, but four consecutive three-pointers by Cass Johnson, and two treys from Ashley Forrest, put the Lady Cats in the driver’s seat. CofO closed out the quarter scoring 13 unanswered points to post a 24-9 advantage.
In the second quarter, the Lady Cats’ defense dominated, as Cottey players struggled to make their shots, scoring only three points on 19 shots. Meanwhile, the Lady Cats tallied 14 to lead the Comets 38-12 at the half. First-half scoring featured CofO’s Cass Johnson with 12 points, while Abby Oliver, who netted a couple long-range shots of her own, scored 10. Kelsie Cleeton hauled in 10 rebounds, dished 3 assists, and nabbed 2 steals. CofO shot 36.8% from the field and 40% from three. Cottey shot just 14.3% in the half.
The Comets returned to the court with new resolve, as Kelsey Acton hit a three-pointer t open the half. However, CofO’s Madi Brethower responded with a three of her own, and the Lady Cats were again off and running. CofO scored 27 points in the quarter, going 8-18 from the field and 6-12 from beyond the arc, with Johnson and Brethower each draining three triples.
In the final quarter, CofO outscored the Comets 25-16 on 9-18 from the field and 3-8 from three, to capture the 90-46 win.
Cass Johnson led all scorers with 27 points, posting her eight consecutive game scoring 20 or more points. She tallied 8 of 11 three pointers, adding 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Three players joined Johnson in double-digit scoring: Oliver (16), Brethower (14), and Kelsie Cleeton (10). Cleeton collected her 17th double-double of the season, pulling down 17 rebounds. She also dished a game-leading seven assists. Cleeton and Grace Steiger each nabbed two steals.. Brethower, Steiger, and Michelle Gabani each blocked one shot.
For the game, the Lady Cats were 31-74 (41.9%) from the field and 17-40 (42.5%) from three. They out-rebounded the Comets 53-26 and turned the ball over 11 times to Cottey’s 19.
Wednesday’s win is the 25th for the Lady Cats against only three losses. The Lady Cats will play their final home game of the season on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The phenomenal senior trio of Madisen Brethower, Kelsie Cleeton, and Cass Johnson will be recognized prior to the start of the game.
