College of the Ozarks women’s basketball opened the Lady Bobcat Classic at home against Lincoln Christian University (Ill.) on Friday evening. The Lady Bobcats used a hot first quarter to jump out to a double-digit lead and never looked back. With an 82-18 win, C of O improved to 23-4 on the season.
To start the game, Aleksei Smith stole the ball and zipped a pass to Ashely Forrest. Then, Forrest reversed the ball for an assist and three-pointer by Abby Oliver. The basket started a 22-0 run that lasted the duration of the first quarter.
While C of O continued to dominate in the second quarter, especially defensively, Lincoln Christian was able to put eight points on the board. At halftime, College of the Ozarks had extended their lead to 45-8. For the half, C of O shot 20 for 41 (48.8%) and held LCU to 4 for 17 (23.5%) including 0 for 6 from distance. The Lady Bobcats forced 17 Red Lion turnovers and controlled the boards 22-13.
In the second half, College of the Ozarks continued to control all facets of the game. C of O would outscore LCU 16-7 in the third quarter and 21-3 in the fourth. By the end of the game, C of O forced 22 Red Lion turnovers and racked-up 21 assists as a team.
For the game, the Lady Bobcats shot 35 for 72 (48.6%) from the field including 10 for 31 (32.3%) from downtown. The stifling defense of the Lady Cats held LCU to just 6 for 46 (13.1%) and no three-pointers made on 16 attempts. College of the Ozarks won the rebounding battle 38-27.
Five Lady Bobcats scored in double-figures. Ashley Forrest led all scorers with 14 points. Forrest also tallied three assists and two steals. Grace Steiger chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds. Annie Noah added 11 points to go along with a game-high 11 rebounds. Abby Oliver and Jordan Wersinger each scored 10 points. Harper Little pilfered a game-high four steals and scored seven points.
