College of the Ozarks women pulled to 16-3 on the season and 2-0 in A.I.I. action with a road victory Saturday afternoon in Clinton, IA, over Ashford University, 68-58.
The Lady Cats held a narrow 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, but outscored the Lady Saints by nine in the second quarter to take a 34-24 halftime lead. Hannah Wisdom (Skyline) led all halftime scorers with 10 points on 5-7 shooting from the field. Lakin Simmerman (Ash Grove) was close behind with 7 points. C of O held a slight rebound advantage 15-14.
The Lady Cats stretched their lead to as many as 16 in the third quarter outscoring Ashford 16-13. The Lady Saints would not go away though, pulling as close as eight in the final minutes before the Lady Bobcats got a clutch basket from Maison Bovard (Ava) off of a nifty feed from Lakin Simmerman. Hannah Wisdom and Shelby Roberts (Bolivar) sealed the victory with made free-throws down the stretch.
Hannah Wisdom posted a game high twenty points on 8-12 shooting from the field, followed by 15 from Lakin Simmerman who was 6-7 from the field and 3-3 from the free throw line. Cass Johnson (West Plains) led with five rebounds on the afternoon.
CofO finished with 46% shooting from the field, while Ashford shot 43%. The Lady Cats were 14-18 from the free throw line for 78%. They also held a rebounding advantage of 31-27 over the Lady Saints. Shelby Roberts, Hannah Wisdom, and Kelsie Cleeton (Hillcrest) each had three assists, contributing to the total of 13 for CofO. The Lady Cats had just 11 turnovers for the game.
The women's and men's teams will travel this upcoming weekend to Gary, Ind., for an A.I.I. Classic at Indiana Northwest University. The NAIA DII #4 ranked Lady Bobcats will tip off at 1 PM on Friday against the host school, who is currently ranked #24.
