The College of the Ozarks Lady ‘Cats took to the court with determination on Friday afternoon in Round 2 of the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa, where they defeated Mayville State by a score of 92-87. While Mayville opened the game scoring the first 4 points, a three-point basket drained by Alice Heinzler brought the Lady’ Cats right back into the game. The two teams remained close throughout the first half, with C of O taking a two-point lead into the locker room at the half thanks to a three-point shot by Jeana Raper with 4 seconds remaining.
College of the Ozarks came out strong in the second half, building their lead by as many as 11 points by the 10:23 mark. Mayville State did not give in, but rather went on a run and over the next seven minutes and took the lead with 4 minutes remaining, growing it to 5 at the 2:30 mark. The Lady’ Cats finished with spunk, however, and took the game to OT, again on a 3-pointer by Raper. The Lady Bobcats controlled the lead throughout most of OT, managing a 5-point victory that enables them to head into the next round, where they will play the winner of Northwestern (IA) vs. Tabor (KS) on Saturday at 3 PM.
Sophomore forward Brandy Uchtman led the Lady ‘Cat going 12-for-20, scoring 25 points, and gathering 8 rebounds. Jeana Raper put down six 3-pointers (6-12) adding 18 points and Kepler and Heinzler contributed 14 and 12 respectively. Kepler also led the rebounding by posting 9 defensive rebounds and capturing 3 steals.
Mayville State was led once again by Marcisa McMillan with a double-double, scoring 19 points while grabbing 11 rebounds and 4 steals. McMillan’s scoring was followed closely by Liza Hoglo (16 points), Longtin (13), and Heier (12).
The Bobcats head into the next round at 23-9, while Mayville closes out the season with a 25-4 record.
