The College of the Ozarks Lady Bobcats knocked off their third consecutive NAIA DI opponent on Monday evening, as they handed #16 ranked Lyon College a 69-59 loss to open the Scots’ season.
College of the Ozarks opened up with a 21-14 lead at the close of the first quarter and managed a one-point advantage in the second quarter to take a 36-28 lead into the locker room at the half. In the third quarter, CofO went on a bit of a run and upped their advantage to as many as 22 points before the Scots chipped away to close out the third period down 13 points. While the Scots returned in the fourth quarter to outscore the Lady Cats, they only drew to within eight points of the Cats.
The Lady Bobcats had four players scoring in double figures, with senior Lakin Simmerman leading the pack with 18 points. Kelsie Cleeton, Cass Johnson, and Abby Oliver each tallied 12 points, and Cleeton added a game-leading 16 rebounds to record yet another double-double night. Cleeton also led the Cats with 3 steals.
Lyon posted a better shooting percentage (39.2%) than the Lady Cats (35.7%) and blocked eight shots, but the Bobcats held the edge in rebounds (44-31), and turned the ball over five fewer times than the Scots (11-16).
Leading the Scots were Ali Tucker and Liz Henderson with 19 and 17 points respectively. Henderson also contributed a team-leading 8 rebounds.
Monday’s win improves the Lady Bobcats’ record to 7-0 on the season. The Cats will host the Coke Classic this coming weekend, where they will play Mid-American Christian University on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
