Playing for the second time in as many days, CofO women's basketball traveled to Fulton, MO, to face the NAIA DI Lady Owls of William Woods. The Lady Cats returned with a victory, improving their record to 6-0.
The Lady Cats only trailed once early in the game, but they quickly jumped out to a 21-7 first quarter lead and never looked back. The margin was twenty at halftime, 42-22. Defensive pressure by the Lady Cats allowed just 22% first half shooting by the Lady Owls. The lead grew to as many as 35 at the 4:09 mark of the third quarter before WWU made a late run to close it back to twenty for the final score of 74-54.
CofO was paced in scoring by senior guard Shelby Roberts, who posted another career high with 22 points. Cass Johnson followed with 16 points, and Lakin Simmerman rounded out the double-figure scoring with 14 points. Kelsie Cleeton once again pulled down double-digit rebounds with ten. Simmerman and Madi Brethower added 8 rebounds apiece to the collection. Brethower, Abby Oliver, and Cleeton each dished out three assists.
The Lady Cats held William Woods to 27% shooting while shooting 44% themselves. CofO also held a 44-37 rebounding advantage.
The Lady Cats will be back in action at home on Monday vs. Lyon College at 5:30. Last year’s contest featured a double overtime victory for the Lady Cats. Another tightly contested game is expected.
