College of the Ozarks’ Lady Bobcats move to 11-1 on the season after defeating William Woods (8-3) by a score of 62-58 in Fulton on Saturday afternoon.
It was a tough shooting day for both teams with neither team managing to reach 40% from the field. The Lady Cats led by as many as eight in the second quarter before nine turnovers in the quarter allowed the Lady Owls to recapture the lead and close the half with a one-point advantage, 30-29.
Poor shooting continued to plague the Lady Cats in the third quarter when they managed just 4-17 from the field, enabling William Woods to stretch their lead to as many as seven.
The fourth quarter was a different story for the Lady Cats as they exploded for 23 points, led by domination from the post position. Maison Bovard tallied ten points in the quarter, along with eight from Brandy Uchtman. On the defensive end, the Cats held the Lady Owl post players and leading scorers to zero points in the final ten minutes. Uchtman broke a tie game with a deep three on the left wing with just over a minute to play. After a defensive stop, the Lady Bobcats failed to connect on the offensive end, but an offensive rebound by Hannah Wisdom with 26 seconds left proved to be crucial. She was then fouled and hit one of two free throws to make it a two-possession game. A William Woods' basket cut the lead to two, but two made free throws by Shelby Roberts pushed the lead back to four with under ten seconds to play. William Woods failed to connect on a three at the buzzer to keep the point differential to four.
Despite struggling on the offensive end, CofO stayed steady defensively, giving up just 58 points to the Lady Owls, ten under their average. The Lady Owls led the rebounding column 47-43. After eleven first-half turnovers, CofO had just three in the second half. Lady Cats shot just 35% from the field to William Woods 36%, and 14% from three (3-22) while WWU managed just 16% (2-13). CofO had 19 assists on 23 made shots.
The Lady Cats were led in scoring by Uchtman with 18, followed by Bovard with 15, and Roberts with 10. Uchtman posted her first double-double of the season with 11 rebounds, and Kelsie Cleeton grabbed 10. Hannah Wisdom finished with seven assists; Cleeton had five assists along with four steals.
The Lady Cats return home for the Coke CAM JAM Classic on December 30-31. They will face another nationally ranked foe in Olivet Nazarene University in the first round of the classic.
