College of the Ozarks women traveled to McPherson, KS on Friday to face A.I.I. opponent Central Christian College. The Lady Cats defeated the Lady Tigers 79-51 behind a balanced scoring attack and solid defense.
CofO held a 40-24 halftime advantage, shooting 41% from the field, while holding CCC to just 29% and 12 turnovers. Thirty one of the forty half-time points came in the paint for the Lady Cats, led by Lakin Simmerman and Maison Bovard. CofO held a 23-20 rebounding advantage.
The Lady Cats held CCC scoreless for over five minutes to start the third quarter, in route to outscoring the Lady Tigers 17-10, for a 57-34 difference after three. CofO followed up with 22 fourth quarter points, while CCC tallied 17 for the 79-51 final. The Lady Cats shot 52% from the field in the second half, finishing with 46% for the game. They also had 20 assists on 27 made shots for the game and had 13 turnovers. CCC shot 30% for the game and finished with 21 turnovers. CofO also led the rebounding column 43-32.
Maison Bovard led the Lady Cats with 14 points, followed by 10 from Lakin Simmerman. Hannah Wisdom and Cass Johnson each had 9. Maggie McMenamy hauled in six rebounds, along with 5 assists to lead CofO. Kelsie Cleeton and Wisdom grabbed three steals each. The CofO bench outscored CCC bench 40-12 and dominated the paint 54-30.
CofO finished off the weekend road trip with an 88-71 victory over York College. Both teams came out hot with a tie score at 22 after one quarter. The Lady Cats continued with their hot shooting, scoring 27 in the second quarter, while limiting the Lady Panthers to 15 points. CofO shot 54% from the field and 57% from 3 in the first half, led by Cass Johnson's 14 points (4-6 from three), and maintained a 49-37 halftime advantage.
CofO cooled off in the second half, shooting just 37% to York's 41%. After getting outscored 19-16 in the third quarter by the Lady Panthers, CofO bounced back to score 23 points in the fourth quarter and hold York to 15 for the 88-71 final.
Cass Johnson led four Lady Cats in double figures with 24 points, a career high. Lakin Simmerman followed with 16, Maggie McMenamy had 12, and Brandy Uchtman netted 10. CofO finished with 24 assists, led by Wisdom and Kelsie Cleeton with six each. The Lady Cats forced 19 turnovers, 11 in the second half. McMenamy and Johnson topped the rebound column with 7 each in route to a 38-29 rebound advantage for CofO. The Lady Cats got 33 points off the bench and had 20 points off of turnovers.
The Lady Bobcats are now 20-3 on the season and will be at home next weekend to face these same two opponents. Friday night is Play 4 Kay Night, in honor of the former North Carolina State women's coach who battled breast cancer multiple times. Both teams will wear pink warm-up t-shirts in honor of Coach Yow and fans are encouraged to wear pink as well. Friday night will also be Parents' Night. The Lady Bobcat parents will be recognized prior to the game. Saturday vs York College will be Senior Night, where Brandy Uchtman will be honored.
