The No. 20 ranked NAIA Division II Lady Bobcats opened up their December 2nd game against NAIA Division I Central Methodist University with senior guard Kayla Kepler draining a 3 pointer. However, the CMU Eagles responded by producing ten unanswered points. It seemed that each time the Lady ‘Cats would close the gap throughout the half, CMU would again stretch their lead. The Bobcats found themselves down by 9 at halftime, 29-38.
Returning with a new focus in the second half, the Lady ‘Cats improved their shooting percentage and took a 59-58 lead with 6:05 remaining. The lead changed hands several times throughout the closing minutes, and found the teams tied at 68 with 21 seconds remaining. Junior forward Brandy Uchtman grabbed the offensive rebound on a missed shot and hit a 2 pointer with 8.4 seconds remaining to give the Bobcats a 70-68 lead, which they held to close out the game.
Central Methodist, who took the court at Keeter Gymnasium with a 6-0 record, shot 48% and garnered 32 rebounds, but gave up the ball 23 times, while the Bobcats posted a 42% field goal shooting percentage with 36 rebounds but had only 14 turnovers.
Leaders for the Lady Bobcats featured Hannah Wisdom, tallying 18 points, with Kayla Kepler and Brandy Uchtman each picking up 14. Uchtman also gathered 6 rebounds and went 2-4 from the 3-point line. Wisdom was 8-15 in field goals with 4 assists and two steals. CMU was headed up by Morgan Vetter, who hit 6 of 13 three pointers for a team-high 18 points. Jesse Ellis went 6-11 to score 14 points, and Taylor Cornelison collected 11 rebounds but was held to 6 total points versus her 17 ppg average.
The win brings the Lady Bobcats’ record to 5-4, while handing the Central Methodist Eagles their first loss of the season. The Lady Bobcats will head to Rolla this Saturday to face Missouri S & T at 5:30 PM.
