The College of the Ozarks Lady Bobcats, with a preseason ranking of #8 in NAIA Division II, faced off against Lyon College, who garnered a #17 ranking in the NAIA Division I preseason poll. Despite a less than stellar 31% field goal percentage, the Lady Bobcats captured the victory over Lyon 64-60.
The Lady Cats started off slowly in the first quarter and were down by as many as 13 at the 1:56 mark in the 2nd quarter, but they fought back to tie the game in the 3rd and outscored the Scots 23-14 in the final quarter to claim the win.
Leading the Lady Bobcats was sophomore Lakin Simmerman with 16 points, going 6-for-12 from the floor and 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Putting up double digits of their own were Hannah Wisdom (14 points, 12 of which were free throws), and freshman Madi Brethower (10 points, including a three pointer). Simmerman and Shelby Roberts posted 4 rebounds apiece, while Brethower and Maggie McMenamy each grabbed two steals.
The Scots were led by Taylor Gaedtke with 12 points and 8 rebounds, followed by Carina Jackson and Whitney O’Dell with 11 and 10 points respectively.
The victory takes the Lady Bobcats overall record to 4-1, while the Scots move to 1-1.
The Lady Bobcats will host the First Community Bank of the Ozarks Classic this coming weekend, with games at 5:30 and 7:30 PM on Friday evening and 1 PM and 3 PM on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Cats will play at 7:30 on Friday against Bethel University (TN) and on Saturday at 3 PM versus Friends University. John Brown University will also participate in the tournament in the 5:30 PM Friday and 1 PM Saturday games.
