College of the Ozarks Lady Bobcats, ranked #7 in NAIA DII, defeated the Owls of Division l William Woods University by a score of 70-67.
The Lady Bobcats battled their way through the first half, shooting just 35% from the field, connecting on only 2 of 16 three-point attempts. Trailing by five at the half, 34-29, College of the Ozarks came back ready to do some damage in the second half. Offensively, Lakin Simmerman, Shelby Roberts and Hannah Wisdom teamed up early in the 3rd quarter to tie the game and pull the Cats into the lead. The Lady Bobcats outscored the Owls 22-14 in the third to take a three-point lead into the final quarter. Cass Johnson, who made only 1 of 5 from the floor in the first half, got hot midway through the third and into the fourth quarter, hitting some big shots to contribute 17 of her 19 points in the second half.
William Woods’ leading scorer in their first two games, Jasmine Brown, was held to six points on the night. Kaycee Gerald and Kelsey Scherder led the Owls with 19 and 18 points respectively, while Peyton Greenlee picked up a double-double with 10 points and rebounds.
Cass Johnson led the Lady Cats with 19 points, including 4 treys. Despite foul trouble, Kelsie Cleeton picked up her 4th double-double on the season posting 13 points and 10 rebounds. Lakin Simmerman & Shelby Roberts also contributed double-digit scoring with 15 & 11 points respectively. Roberts had 3 steals, while Simmerman and Wisdom each collected 2.
College of the Ozarks’ win takes the Lady Bobcats’ record to 5-0 on the season. They will head out of town this weekend to take on Oklahoma City University and John Brown University in the JBU Classic being held in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.
