Lady Cats Battle to Win a Close One
CofO women won a thriller in Lawrence, KS, 83-80 over #22 Haskell Indian Nations. The game featured 15 ties and 12 lead changes, with CofO's biggest lead of seven occurring with 3:37 remaining in the second quarter. Haskell led by as many as five with 6:08 remaining in the game, for their biggest lead.
CofO held a 44-41 halftime advantage, with both teams shooting well (CofO 55%, Haskell 45%). The Lady Cats uncharacteristically had 15 first half turnovers, while forcing 13 of Haskell. Haskell was 7-13 from the three point line in the first half.
Both teams cooled off in the second, with Haskell shooting 39% and CofO shooting 43% CofO held Haskell to 4-14 from the three point line in the second half. The Lady Cats trailed the Lady Indians by 2, 64-62 going into the fourth period. After falling behind by 5 with 6 minutes to play, Cass Johnson hit three from behind the arc to rally the Lady Cats. Lakin Simmerman scored a layup, followed by defensive stop, a Hannah Wisdom free throw, and another defensive stop. Brandy Uchtman's free throw proved to be the final margin of three.
CofO was led in scoring by Cass Johnson with 17, Lakin Simmerman with 13, Hannah Wisdom had 12, Kelsie Cleeton with 11, and Brandy Uchtman tallied 11. Cleeton led with 6 rebounds, Shelby Roberts had 5 assists, and Johnson had 3 steals. The Lady Cats had a 39-26 rebound advantage. CofO finished with 49% shooting from the field, while Haskell shot 42%. CofO also scored 38 points in the paint compared to Haskell's 14. The Lady Cats got 35 points off the bench.
The Lady Cats are now 23-3 on the season and have two remaining regular season games, both on the road, at Mt. Mercy on Friday night and Waldorf on Saturday afternoon.
