The College of the Ozarks Lady Bobcats headed off to Sioux City, Iowa last week and proceeded to take it by storm. They began by posting victories in the opening two rounds, and again enthralled their fans with a win in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Then, on Monday evening in the semi-final game of the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship, the Lady Bobcats defeated Davenport University by a score of 75-72, to earn themselves a spot in Tuesday night's championship game against No. 1 seeded St. Francis, who has gone undefeated on the season.
In tonight's effort, Freshman standout Alice Heinzler scored 27 points, going 7 of 14 (5-8 from the three point line) and 8-8 from the charity stripe. She also grabbed 3 steals in the process. Supporting Heinzler was Kayla Kepler with 14 points and a team-leading 9 rebounds and 8 assists. Brandy Uchtman also contributed 13 points and 6 rebounds in the Lady Cats' exciting effort to advance to the final game.
Davenport, seeded first in their bracket with a record of 32-1 going into the tournament, kept the game close throughout, but was unable to achieve the expected victory. Kayleigh VanKeulen posted 16 points and Tiesha Stokes provided 14. Davenport struggled from the 3-point line, hitting only 5 of 24, while C of O went 9 for 18.
The Lady Bobcats will take the court in Sioux City on Tuesday evening at 7 PM. Their game will be covered by ESPN3.
