The Lady Bobcats are eager to take the court in Sioux City, Iowa, for their 23rd appearance in the NAIA DII Women’s Basketball National Championship. The team is coming off a conference championship and has tallied an impressive overall record of 26-4, having faced numerous DI and top-25 ranked DII schools throughout the season.
The Lady Cats will first face Reinhardt (Ga.) of the Appalachian Athletic Conference on Thursday afternoon. With a record of 27-5, Reinhardt earned a bid to the tournament as an at-large selection. This will be only the second appearance for the Lady Eagles, who lost in their first round back in 2013.
It will be a battle for the boards between the two teams, as Reinhardt is ranked number 3 in the nation for total rebounds per game, and C of O is ranked right behind at number 4.
The teams also have the commonality of having standout underclassmen. Reinhardt has been led this season by freshman Rebecca Cheeks in points (16.03), rebounds (9.88), and steals (1.66) per game. C of O sophomore Cass Johnson has led the Lady Cats in scoring, averaging 14.8 points per game, and sophomore Kelsie Cleeton has led in rebounds and steals, averaging 10.17 and 2.4, respectively, per game.
The Lady Cats will also look to senior Hannah Wisdom, averaging 10.9 points per game, and junior Lakin Simmerman, averaging 11.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, as they look to improve their record of 40-22 in national tournament play.
The winner of the Thursday, March 9th 3:30 p.m. game will play Friday evening at 7 p.m. against the winner of Friday's contest between Morningside and Siena Heights.
