In her first year as Head Coach, Becky Vest took the Lady Bobcats to Sioux City last week and showed everyone the Lady ‘Cats have what it takes to compete!
College of the Ozarks’ first game of the NAIA DII Women’s Basketball National Championship found the Lady Bobcats defeating St. Xavier by no small margin with a score of 68-43. St. Xavier, from Illinois, was 27-5 on the season and ranked No. 2 in their bracket. On Friday, the Lady ‘Cats faced off against Mayville State of North Dakota (24-3 record and #3 seed), sending the Comets home following a Lady ‘Cat 86-82 victory.
The Lady Bobcats entered Saturday’s Quarter-Finals against one of their old foes—Northwestern (Iowa). Northwestern came into the tournament with a 27-4 record and the number 1 seed in the Lady ‘Cats bracket. While Northwestern held the upper hand against the Lady ‘Cats in several prior meetings, C of O reigned victorious with a 90-69 win sending College of the Ozarks to the Semi-Finals game on Monday evening.
The Semi-Finals squared off College of the Ozarks against Davenport (Michigan). Heading into the tournament, Davenport was 31-1 and seeded first in their bracket. In an exciting game, the Lady ‘Cats posted a 75-72 win to move on to the Championship Finals.
Saint Francis, out of Indiana, was their opponent, and had an impressive 36-0 record to preserve as they faced the Lady Bobcats. Despite a fantastic effort, the Lady ‘Cats were unable to finish off St. Francis, and the Lady Bobcats were crowned Runner-Up of the 2014 Championship.
While every member of the Lady Bobcat team made contributions to the tournament, a few stood out. Freshman guard Alice Heinzler was named First Team on the 2014 National Championship Team, and Senior guard Emily Walker was named Second Team. In addition, Junior guard Kayla Kepler received the All-Tournament NAIA Hustle Award.
