College of the Ozarks Bobcats topped Evangel University by a 20-poin margin on Tuesday evening to hand the Crusaders an 83-63 loss in their season opener.
The Bobcats opened up the game with a three-pointer by Canyon Smith, which was quickly answered with a trey by Evangel’s Nick Yocum. The Cats then proceeded to have difficulty hitting their shots. They were trailing the Crusaders by 12 points (19-7) with 9 minutes remaining in the first half before the lid came off the basket, and they proceeded to close out the first half with a five-point advantage at 32-27.
In the second half, the Crusaders opened up with a couple of quick baskets to draw within one point, but the Bobcats responded by steadily increasing their lead as the half progressed.
Cameron Paschke once again led the Bobcats in scoring, tallying 29 on the night, which included two 3-pointers and a solid 15-of-16 at the free throw line. Joining Paschke in double-digit scoring were Canyon Smith (16 points, 3-of-4 three pointers) and Heath Carmichael (10 points). Kiefer Starbird grabbed a team-leading 8 rebounds, while Ethan Davidson and Heath Carmichael collected 7 and 6 rebounds respectively.
Tuesday’s win takes the Bobcats’ record to 4-1 on the season. The men will head to the Huntington Classic in Indiana this weekend to face Cornerstone University on Friday at 6 p.m. and an opponent to be announced on Saturday afternoon.
