The top-seeded Northwood Seahawks (Fla.) held the College of the Ozarks Bobcats (Mo.) at bay for a 67-50 win on day one of the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship at the College of the Ozarks.
Northwood took the lead for good when it got a 3-point shot from Thierno Agne just under a minute into the game and they quickly built the advantage to 12-4. The Bobcats did cut the gap to 14-11 at the 10:46 mark of the half but they couldn't sustain the surge against the tournament's No. 1 seed.
Northwood extended the lead to 30-19 at the half and kept it rolling all the way to a 60-36 advantage with 8:13 remaining in the game. The Bobcats did manage to cut into the lead, slicing it to 60-47 with an 11-0 run late in the game before succumbing to The Sun Conference champion.
The Seahawks were paced by Agne's 16 points while Jonathan Dunn had 12 and Tracy Parks 10.
Weston Wiebe and Mike Wiebe shared team honors for the Bobcats with 11 points each with Weston Wiebe grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.
Northwood was 27-for-51 from the floor for 52.9 percent. The Seahawks won by a comfortable margin despite making just 4-of-15 free throws. The College of the Ozarks was 21-for-48 from the floor for 41.7 percent. The Bobcats had a 34-25 rebounding advantage.
Northwood advances to the second round of the tournament on Friday with a 31-3 record and has won six games in-a-row. Rollie Massimino's team will face Marian (Ind.) at 5:45 p.m. CST on Friday. The College of the Ozarks exits the 2012 tournament with a 14-16 record.
