The Athletic Department recognized the 2015-2016 Bobcat athletes on Wednesday, April 27th, at the annual Athletic Awards Banquet. The teams came together with coaches, parents and fans to celebrate the past season’s success.
The volleyball, basketball, cheer, and cross country coaches presented athletes with individual awards for their sport. The baseball season is still underway, so Bobcat baseball awards will be presented following the completion of their season.
In addition to individual team recognitions, three awards encompassing the entire athletic program were presented to athletes of various teams. The Courage Award, given to an athlete who has overcome adversity, was presented by Athletic Trainer Gary Turbak to sophomore baseball pitcher Christian Vonderheide.
The Champions of Character Awards were presented by Campus Character Liaison Dr. Mark Rapinchuk to athletes who best exemplify the NAIA’s five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. This year’s NAIA Champions of Character award winners featured: Naomi Murrell--women’s cross country, Loyal Carpenter--men’s cross country, Savannah Norwine--cheer, Jamie Reaves Myers--volleyball, Brandy Uchtman--women’s basketball, Ethan Murray--men’s basketball, and Caleb Rowold--baseball.
The Bruiser T. Bobcat Award was presented at the banquet by Emma Carter and Dalton Lane, officers of the C of O Council for Student Programs. Senior accounting major Stephen Chavez was recognized with this award for his outstanding leadership in promoting school spirit through the C of O Athletic program.
Closing out the evening was the presentation of the Chris Waller Outstanding Student Athlete Award. This award recognizes the top senior male and female lettermen with the highest GPA, combining athletic and academic excellence. Retired longtime faculty and staff members Al and Marty Waller presented the 2016 awards, in memory of their son Chris, to women’s cross country runner Lindsay Heun and men’s basketball player Joe Young.
