baseballThe College of the Ozarks Bobcats faced Northwestern College (Iowa) on Saturday afternoon at Coach Bob Smith Field in Pt. Lookout.  The Bobcats won the first game, 9-3, but fell 5-9 in game two, going 2-2 for the weekend.

Bobcat junior Alex Stephens collected a complete-game win, in the noon matchup, where the Bobcats tallied 9 runs on 11 hits and two Red Raider errors.  The Cats opened up to an early 6-0 lead by scoring four runs in the first and two in the second.  Neither team scored in the third, and the Bobcats scored one in each of their remaining innings to close out the game 9-3.

Leading the Cats at the plate were third baseman Tad Mitchell and first baseman J. D. Payne, each of whom went 2-for-2 and scored two runs.  Mitchell also picked up an RBI.  Outfielder Cody Hull was 2-for-3, with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.  Stephens pitched 7 innings giving up 3 runs on 9 hits, no walks and 2 strikeouts.  Chase Davis took the loss for Northwestern.

The second game featured an array of pitchers for the Bobcats, as six pitchers took the mound for the Cats during the 7-inning game.  The Red Raiders took an early 6-0 lead, but the Bobcats made some noise in the bottom of the fourth to score three runs and cut the deficit in half.  Unfortunately, Northwestern came back in the top of the 5th to score 3 and again increase the spread to 6 runs.  The Bobcats scored two in the bottom of the seventh, but finished with a 9-5 loss.  The Red Raiders spattered 15 hits throughout the game, while the Cats had only four.  Errors also featured in the game, as the Red Raiders posted 4 and C of O had 3.

The Bobcats were led by Cody Hull, Kole Kelley, and Jessse Fisher, who each went 1-for-2; Fisher posted 2 RBI.  The Red Raiders’ Zach Cortese was 4-for-5, scoring 3 and adding 1 RBI, while picking up two doubles.
