Bobcats Post 30 Wins for First Time Since 2005

Needing three victories to reach the 30-win plateau, the Bobcats pulled off a three-game sweep on Friday in Clinton, Ia.

College of the Ozarks defeated Ashford University 3-0, 8-0 and 10-1 to end the regular season with a 30-22 record. The teams played a tripleheader on Friday to avoid incoming rain showers on Saturday.

In the opener, junior pitcher Garrett Woods pitched a shutout for the second consecutive start, liming the Saints to just four hits while striking out five and walking just one. Woods didn't allow a hit until the fifth. C of O scored in the second inning on Tad Mitchell's RBI single that followed a Dylan Heitz triple. Mitchell stole second and scored on a single up the middle.

In game two, the Bobcats scored two runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings and C of O starter Christian Vonderheide notched the second shutout of the day. Vonderheide allowed just one hit and scattered three hits to pick up the victory.  Cody Hull, J.D. Chadwell, Winston Rasmussen and Austin Schweiss each had a pair of hits to pace the Bobcats' 11-hit attack. C of O also stole six bases in the contest, part of a 10-steal day.

In the nine-inning series finale, Kole Kelley had three hits and J.D. Payne added two hits and two RBI as the Bobcats raced out to a big lead. Four Bobcat pitchers combined to limit Ashford to just two hits while striking out 10. Freshman starter Logan Teal picked up the victory, pitching five innings and striking out five.

The Bobcats will head to Lawrenceville, Ga., next week to compete in the A.I.I. Conference Tournament. C of O is the fifth-seed and will open tournament play against fourth-seeded Mount Mercy (Ia.) at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 7.
