The College of the Ozarks Bobcats picked up their second win in as many days with an 8-1 victory over Avila University on Friday afternoon.
The Cats scored early, posting six runs in the bottom of the first inning, beginning with a single by Jacob Karlson, who scored on a J. D. Payne double to dep left center. In the inning, the Cats tallied 6 runs on 6 hits and one error. Avila Pitcher E. J. Merlo was able to close out the 2nd inning quickly, but gave up 2 additional runs on 3 Bobcat hits. Erick Mojica came in to pitch in the bottom of the 4th inning and gave up only one hit in the remaining 5 innings.
Bobcats’ senior pitcher Garrett Woods picked up his third win of the season, going 8 innings and giving up 7 hits, 2 walks and 1 earned run, while striking out seven batters. The Eagles made some noise in the top of the 8th, when following a strike out and ground out, Randy Keen singled to left, Trevor Norbury doubled to deep left, and Anthony Biondo reached on a walk. Eric Shempert, however, grounded out to end the inning, leaving 3 runners on base. C of O freshman Isaac Norsic stepped in to pitch the 9th inning, giving up no hits or walks and hitting one batter.
Leading the Bobcats at the plate were J. D. Chadwell (2-for-2, scoring 2 runs), Tad Mitchell (2-for-4 with 2 hits, including a double, 2 runs scored, 2 RBI) and J. D. Payne (2-for-4, including a double, 1 run scored, 1 RBI).
The win brings the Bobcats’ record to 7-8 on the season. They will play Avila in a doubleheader on Saturday in Point Lookout beginning at noon.
