College of the Ozarks women’s cross country team and four members of the men’s cross country team traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to compete in the NAIA Cross Country National Championship on Friday, November 16th.
The Lady Bobcats qualified after being named Champions of the A.I.I. Conference two weeks ago. Bobcat runners Sam Baumer, Shane York, Garrett Pierce, and Wesley Moore represented College of the Ozarks in the Men’s run, after the Bobcats finished as Runners Up in the A.I.I. Conference Championship.
As a team, the women finished 34 out of 36 teams with a time of 1:43.04 in the 5K race. Finishing first for the Lady Cats in 223rd out of 339 total runners was sophomore Bethany Marteney (19:38.9) who set a personal record, recording a finishing time under 20 minutes for the first time. Fellow sophomore Bethany Edgar finished 271st (20:12.6), with junior Hannah Duncan close behind in 293rd (20:31.6). Rounding out the scoring for the women’s team was Adeline Holder (306 – 20:49.4), Naomi Murrell (319 – 21:51.1), Aspyn Britt (323 – 22:06.3), and Mary Zimmerman (324 – 22:07.6).
Four Bobcat team members competed in the 8 kilometer race. Leading the way was sophomore Sam Baumer, who finished 126 out of 330 runners with a time of 25:52.7. Baumer’s time was not only a personal record for himself, but the first time since the re-instatement of the cross country program that a runner has broken the 26-minute mark. Garrett Pierce also set a personal records, finishing in 253rd with a time of 26:52.2. Shane York took 293rd place with a time of 27:37.6, and Wesley Moore came in at 307th, posting a time of 28:27.1.
The NAIA National Championship served as the Bobcats’ and Lady Bobcats’ final race of the year. Congratulations to both teams on a fantastic season!
