The College of the Ozarks men’s and women’s golf teams competed in the Williams Baptist University Invitational at Big Creek Golf Course in Mountain Home, Arkansas on April 8th and 9th.  The award-winning Big Creek Golf Course featured zoysia fairways and L-93 bent grass greens protected by white sand bunkers.

Soggy conditions from the weekend were exacerbated by day one morning showers, causing the course to play very long throughout the tournament.  Both the Bobcats and Lady Bobcats battled through the conditions and posted some very impressive scores, including team finishes of 3rd and 2nd respectively.

Speaking of both teams, Coach Chris Larsen commented, “It is exciting to see that the hard work is paying off as we are starting to get some things figured out.”

For the tournament, the Lady Bobcats set two program records, including lowest one-day score (347 on day two) and lowest tournament overall score (700).  Hannah Aherin led the way with her phenomenal opening round of 82 followed by an 85 to earn a 5th place individual medal.  Aherin led all golfers on par 3 scoring by shooting even par.

Other Lady Cat top performers included Ashley Stanphill and Kate Voss.  Stanphill’s (89, 86, 175 total) consistent play was good for a 10th place finish.  Although Voss (94, 82, 176 total) stumbled on Monday with a 94, she adjusted to the wet conditions to improve 12 strokes on Tuesday to finish 11th individually.

The men had five golfers post scores in the 70’s, including two top-10 finishers:  Jon Bell (8th, 75, 79, 154 total) and Ricardo Devoto (10th, 77, 78, 155 total).  Other Bobcat golfers scoring in the 70’s included Caleb Davis (15th, 78, 80, 158 total), Stuart Jacobs (19th, 83, 79, 162 total), and Heath Carmichael (21st, 89, 77, 166 total).

Perhaps the Bobcats and Lady Bobcats are peaking at just the right time, as they both resume play April 30th in San Antonio, Texas for the A.I.I. Conference Tournament.
