Marcos Devoto - Champion of Character
College of the Ozarks men’s and women’s golf teams traveled to San Antonio, Texas to compete in the A.I.I. Conference Championship Golf Tournament on April 29-30 hosted by Our Lady of the Lake University.
Monday featured overcast skies, but no rain, with temperatures in the low 80’s, and Tuesday was slightly cooler with intermittent showers. The course played 7,007 yards for the men off the championship tees and 5,817 for the women. Most fairways were deeply lined by trees, and many holes featured bunkers and natural wetlands. As is presently the case with many courses in the San Antonio area, the greens were in rough shape due to multiple bare patches, making putts difficult.
The Bobcats placed sixth out of nine total teams in the tournament, which featured three rounds of play. The men were led by Jon Bell, who posted two rounds in the 70’s, shooting 82/73/78. He tied for eighteenth place overall, shooting a 233. Next in line was Heath Carmichael at 253 and Marcos Devoto with a 257. Other highlight rounds for the Bobcats included Stuart Jacobs (79), Heath Carmichael (81), Ricardo Devoto (82), and Marcos Devoto and Caleb Davis (83). Marcos Devoto was named the Bobcats’ A.I.I. Champion of Character.
The women’s team finished in second place overall as a team behind an impressive University of Victoria team and ahead of Indiana University Northwest. Leading the Lady Cats in a tie for sixth place overall were freshman Hannah Aherin and sophomore Ashley Stanphill. Both posted a two-round score of 190. One point behind, for a total score of 191 was Kate Voss, who finished seventh. Skylar Kistler came in eighth and Kaylee Thieme rounded out the scoring in eleventh place. Thieme was also named an A.I.I. Champion of Character during the golf tournament’s opening banquet.
Congratulations to the Bobcats and Lady Bobcats on a great fall and spring season! They have made impressive strides forward from their first year of competition.
