CofO women’s basketball  traveled to Lindsborg, KS this evening to face Bethany College in the first road test of the season.  Bethany was picked to finish second in the KCAC and received votes in the NAIA preseason poll.

The Lady Cats came out strong defensively in the first half, holding Bethany to just one made field goal in the first half, which didn’t come until 30 seconds left in the half.  CofO headed into the locker room with a 38-9 lead.  Madi Brethower led the Lady Cats with 15 first half points.  The Swedes shot just 4% from the field in the first half along with ten turnovers, while the Lady Cats shot 38% from the field and turned the ball over five times.  CofO held a 25-19 rebounding advantage.

CofO stretched the lead to 65-29 at the end of the third quarter, before being outscored by three in the fourth quarter.  The Lady Cats shot 50% from the field and 75% from the three point line in the second half.  The Swedes improved to 35% from the field in the second half.

Madi Brethower led all scorers with 22 points, a new career high.  She was 4 for 6 from the three point line and perfect from the charity stripe.  Cass Johnon contributed three triples of her own, on her way to 13 points.  Aleksei Smith added ten points, as did Kelsie Cleeton.  She had her third double digit rebounding game, hauling in a game high eleven rebounds.  She also led with five assists and four steals.

The Lady Cats are now 3-0 on the season.  They will head to Cardinal Stritch this weekend for a classic in Milwaukee.  The Lady Cats will play the host team on Friday evening, followed by St. Francis (IL) on Saturday, who knocked them out of the national tournament a year ago.
